As Incubus wraps up their Europe tour right now, there are plans to take a short break, and possibly head back into the studio to start recording the next in the series of Incubus cds. Why stop the trail if it is going full steam?? I agree. Click here for updates tour dates, join a mailing list, and even vote for Incubus to come to your town!!!!! Or you can click here to share your Incubus concert experience and view the setlists that Incubus followed during a particular set. I guess Mike has been seen sporting a wrist support, giving the idea that maybe he has Carpal Tunnel. 10+ years of guitar playing just might do that to someone. I know as a drummer, I have it for sure. Can’t be young forever, I suppose.

Fans in Europe are raving about Incubus’ latest tour, “Light Grenades”. I myself, am going to try and make it to one of their shows here in Michigan. Its been a while since I have actually seen Incubus, so its overdue that I see them doing this new set. “Quicksand” is the song they usually open with, according to their setlists. “Anna Molly” is another of the most popular tunes during this tour. “A Kiss To Send Us Off” has also made the many setlists, and I can see why. Its one of the more “old-school” Incubus songs, with a health dose of modern day style. Its one of my preferred tracks on “Light Grenades”. In fact, the entire setlist from the 30th of September was really awesome. Click the link above to see that, as well as the rest of the set lists.

Don’t forget to check out and give to the Make Yourself Foundation, a great charity to give to.

Come to Michigan and read about Breaking Benjamin.

As a music lover, I anticipate many of my favorite bands’ new releases in advance. I get that “ooh, goody goody” feeling in my stomach, do a fist pump, and shout. I take it a bit far, according to some, but alas, I mostly get excited that the new album is going to be in my MP3 player for weeks to come. Everyone who rides in my car hears whatever new album I am listening to, and I surely mention new cds to every one of my friends when I see them. The exception to this last line was with “Light Grenades”.

SCIENCE, Fungus Amongus, Make Yourself, and Morning View were all incredibly good cds, in my opinion. They all fantastic tracks on them. Even some of the more ballad-esque and slower songs still sounded great to me. Light Grenades, even after listening to it for more than a year now, I just don’t think is their finest work yet. The mood of the cd is that of confusion, disorientation, and a jumbled assortment of sounds. Its very mellow, which I can appreciate (as a musician myself i know that time can change your direction, cause you to experiment a little in a new direction, or simply just change your style.) but its my opinion that the mellowness doesn’t suit the band any kind of true justice. Tracks like “Dig” and “Meglomaniac” have a wonderful message and feel to them, and help me remember what a great band Incubus really is, and just how talented all five members are. Maybe this album is a grown up version of Incubus.Maybe this one wasn’t designed to specifically sell a bazillion copies. Maybe they made this just simply because it felt right to them.

I think Incubus will write their best work yet. This wasn’t it. I know it’s coming, though.

I found some great band member quotes to share with you today. Enjoy!!

Brandon Boyd —

“We have all the elements of being the worst band in the world: a bass player who’s got some slap-bass shit, heavy riff guitars, a DJ scratching on the songs, a crazy drummer, and a singer who’s in touch with his feminine side. Even our band name is the worst name ever: it evokes imagery of ‘Incubus’ in death-metal writing, with bullet belts across our chests.”
Rolling Stone, on being satirical on how his band ‘comes off’ from his most objective view.

“Thank you for not throwing any sharp objects onto the stage, because they really hurt.”
After playing Just a Phase on 9/27/02.

“I don’t think I’ve actually experienced a woman just handing out vagina. I’ve never experienced that yet.”
In Rolling Stone scoffing at accusations that women must throw themselves at him all the time.

“Morning View is I think collectively probably our favorite record that we have made as a band because it was the most effortless… um… in its conception… you know? It was a lot less slaving over parts and trying to just get together in this big beautiful room with a view of the ocean and parts and sounds and melodies and lyrics would just happen… they would just sort of spill out of us without us really trying… so to me that’s sort of the most amazing way to write music or do any kind of art, which is by letting it happen… but one of the most important parts in any sort of.. uh… journey so to speak.. Is uh… the ride… and we’ve had a really good time riding to where ever it is we are going… and I don’t even think any of us know particularly where it is going to take us… But it’s been really fun sort of chasing it.”
Discussing Morning View on Boogie TV interview was done the day of their concert at Vega, Copenhagen.

Mike Einzinger —

“I think rock music is at the lowest point I’ve ever experienced. Now, this rock-rap metal that’s all over the place just makes me want to throw up. I mean, how many times can you really tolerate listening to someone tune up their guitar so loudly that it’s just noise? I don’t like to insult others, so I won’t mention any names, but I just don’t find any intelligence in the music anymore. How angry can you really be living in the suburbs?”

“Our next record is going to have so much dancing on it thats there’s not even going to be music, just dancing.”
MTV Undercover

“When you hit the strings you can feel the vibration in your fingers and your body; you don’t get that playing some kind of synthesizer. That’s why guitar will never go away. When you pick up a guitar and start playing, the sound flows through your whole body. It becomes part of you.”

Jose Pasillas —

“We’ll throw a gummy bear across the room every now and then, but that’s pretty much the extent of it.”
MTV’s Diary, on his band’s rock and roll “excess”

“If you have a smile on your face and you make a lot of noise, people really really think you know what you are doing.”
The Morning View Sessions

Ben Kenney —

“”I want to sound like James Jamerson on a rock track. When everything else stops and the bass keeps going, I want it to be that part where everybody says, “Oh, shit!”
BassPlayer 2006

“I couldn’t be happier than I am in Incubus, this is a dream come true for me, literally.” — XPress Magazine

Chris Kilmore —

“It was cool. I just used candles at night.”
Kilmore before joining Incubus and sometimes having no electricity, Spin (October 2001)

While on tour with Hoobastank, Incubus released the first single from “Morning View” titled “I Wish You Were Here”. I distinctly remember this song, as it was a favorite of my girlfriend at the time, as were many off this cd. My personal favorite from this cd was “Circles”. Other mentionable tracks are “Echo” (Ex-girlfriend Abbi’s favorite, by far.) and “Have You Ever”.

“Morning View” was named after the street the mansion where they recorded this album was on. My idea was wrong, I admit, but I could have been right. Released on October 23rd, 2001, it started at #2 on the charts, selling over 400,000 copies its first week. “Wish You Were Here” landed them on Letterman, Mtv’s TRL, and by December of 2001, “Morning View” had already gone platinum — less than 2 months after its release. Good job, fellas.

With 5 songs in the top 50, Incubus was doing well, to say the least, to start 2002. January 2002 brought a video for “Nice to Know You”, as well as appearances on Letterman (again), Leno, and a revolving place on MTV’s TRL. Ready to set sail for Japan and Australia until the end of March, Incubus was energetic and flying high, not to mention, enjoying themselves.

Incubus finally went platinum with “Make Yourself” as of October 5th, 2000, seeting the pace for them to tour with California legends The Deftones and Ann Arbor, MIchigan’s own Taproot. (I saw this show in Grand Rapids, MI at The Orbit Room — the singer form Taproot jumped off of a 15 foot high balcony and the crowd caught him. He got back onstage and told the crowd that it was the most awesome thing he had done yet; it was sweet.)

Incubus released the third single, “Drive” from “Make Yourself”, which eventually would be a #1 hit. They soon rented a house in Malibu, CA on Pacific Coast Highway (just down the road from Matt Groening and David Geffen, not to mention John Stamos.) to record the follow up album, which would be “Morning View”. I’m assuming they named it that since, if you’ve ever been to Malibu, CA, you’d know that the sunrises and sunsets there are breathtaking. If you get the chance, check it out.

After 6 weeks in Europe, they returned to the states to find out that “Make Yourself” had gone double platinum (2 million copies). August of 2001 brought then to Japan and Australia for the first time.

Sadly, Incubus lost the Best Group Video award to N’Sync for 2001.

We last left off with Incubus releasing “Make Yourself” and going on Tour with Primus and Buckethead.

That tour lasted all through 1999, and starting in early 2000, Incubus went out again with System of a Down and Mr Bungle (If you have never heard Mr Bungle, you don’t know what you’re missing. Mike Patton is legendary.) until March, when Incubus hooked up with label-mates Ultraspank until April.

“Make Yourself” went Gold Status after only 7 months in stores and had at least three hit singles, including “Stellar”, “Drive”, and “Pardon Me”. The acoustic version of “Pardon Me” was huge in 2000, and due to the success of the band thus far, Incubus re-released “Fungus Amongus”, since fans were having a tough time finding it in stores in November of 2000.

Just before that, in August 2000, Incubus released “When Incubus Attacks, Volume 1″, which contained acoustic versions of songs from “Make Yourself”. It sold 40,000 copies in 7 days, popping them to Billboard’s Modern Rock chart quickly.
