Part 4 in the history of Incubus

by

When we left them last time, Incubus had just recorded “Fungus Amongus” If you haven’t read the earlier Incubus blogs yet, scroll down and catch up!!) and enjoying it success. And then, a local DJ called DJ Lyfe saw them perform live, and began putting the idea of using some hip-hop tracks into their already interesting sound and he joined after one rehearsal, despite skepticism from other members of the band.

Now, with a complete new sound that had never really been done well up to this point, the band was definitely turning heads as word spread about them. A bidding war ensued between Immortal Records, and another label. Incubus went with Immortal since Immortal had the idea that Incubus would a touring live band, not just a 2 hit sensation, who would develop a fanbase, starting from scratch.

For the duration of 1996, Incubus toured extensively and established themselves as a major don’t-miss-us-when-we-come-to-your-town music group, garnering a pretty big following up and down the West Coast.

In January of 1997, Incubus re-recorded 4 tracks from Fungus Amongus plus 2 recently recorded tracks with DJ Lyfe and made the EP “Enjoy Incubus on Immortal’s label. After that release, Incubus went on a European Tour Korn and Urge, which ended up an incredible success.. At the end of that tour, Incubus set to record a major label debut full length album, ultimately being titled “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.“. To date, this is still my absolute favorite Incubus album. It defines them, in my ind, to not just being a this or that band, but a group of individually talented musicians who come together. “Certain Shade of Green”, “Medicine”, “Favorite Things” and “Nebula” are some very mentionable tracks from that cd.

Jim Wirt, after recording SCIENCE, was assigned to creat a soundtrack for the movie “Spawn”. With already awesome talent on the soundtrack, he asked Incubus to write a song for it too, and days after completing the recording, Incubus set out on the road with “Phunk Junkees” and one of the best bands ever, in my opnion, “Snot”.

Part 5 — How does the SCIENCE album fare with concert-goers?
